RESUMO

Precision nutrition and nutrigenomics are emerging in the development of therapies for multiple diseases. The ketogenic diet (KD) is the most widely used clinical diet, providing high fat, low carbohydrate, and adequate protein. KD produces ketones and alters the metabolism of patients. Growing evidence suggests that KD has therapeutic effects in a wide range of neuronal diseases including epilepsy, neurodegeneration, cancer, and metabolic disorders. Although KD is considered to be a low-side-effect diet treatment, its therapeutic mechanism has not yet been fully elucidated. Also, its induced keto-response among different populations has not been elucidated. Understanding the ketone metabolism in health and disease is critical for the development of KD-associated therapeutics and synergistic therapy under any physiological background. Here, we review the current advances and known heterogeneity of the KD response and discuss the prospects for KD therapy from a precision nutrition perspective.

Pampus is a widespread species of fish in the western Pacific and Indian Oceans that has significant commercial worth. Its evolutionary history and phylogenetics are still poorly understood, and details on its intraspecific taxonomy are debatable, despite some morphological and molecular research. Here, we analyzed this species using skeletal structure data as well as nuclear (S7 gene) and mitochondrial genetic information (COI, D-loop and mitogenomes). We found that the genetic distance between P. argenteus and P. echinogaster was much smaller than that between other Pampus species, and both maximum likelihood and Bayesian phylogenetic trees yielded almost identical tree topologies. An additional and adjacent M repeat was found in the downstream region of the IQM gene cluster of P. argenteus and P. echinogaster, and the trnL2 gene of P. minor was translocated. The genus Pampus experienced early rapid radiation during the Palaeocene with major lineages diversifying within a relatively narrow timescale. Additionally, three different methods were conducted to distinguish the genus Pampus species, proving that P. argenteus and P. echinogaster are the same species, and P. liuorum is speculated to be a valid species. Overall, our study provides new insights not only into the evolutionary history of Pampus but its intraspecific taxonomy as well.

In the artificial breeding of Pampus argenteus (Euphrasen, 1788), female fish spawn before male release sperm, which indicates rapid ovarian development. In fish, aromatase is responsible for converting androgens into estrogens and estrogen plays a crucial role in ovarian development. In this study, we aimed to investigate the potential role of brain-type and ovarian-type aromatase to study the rapid ovarian development mechanism. The results showed that cyp19a1a was mainly expressed in the ovary and could be classified as the ovarian type, whereas cyp19a1b could be considered as the brain type for its expression was mainly in the brain. During ovarian development, the expression of cyp19a1a in the ovary significantly increased from stage IV to stage V and Cyp19a1a signals were present in the follicle cells, while cyp19a1b expression in the pituitary gland decreased from stage IV to stage V. To further investigate the function of Cyp19a1a, recombinant Cyp19a1a (rCyp19a1a) was produced and specific anti-Cyp19a1a antiserum was obtained. The expressions of cyp19a1a, estrogen receptors 2 alpha (esr2a), and androgen receptor alpha (arα) were significantly upregulated in the presence of rCyp19a1a. Meanwhile, cyp19a1a was expressed significantly after E2 treatment in both ovarian and testicular tissue culture. Taken together, we found two forms of aromatase in silver pomfret. The ovarian-type aromatase might play an important role in ovarian differentiation and maturation, and participate in E2 synthesis through co-regulation with esr2a. The brain-type aromatase cyp19a1b might be involved in the regulation of both brain and gonadal development.

As indicator organisms for water pollution detection, Pseudogasteromyzon species play a vital role in aquatic environment monitoring. We have successfully sequenced the mitogenomes of P. fasciatus jiulongjiangensis and P. myersi and downloaded the mitogenomes of nine other Pseudogastromyzon fish on GenBank to conduct a detailed comparative analysis of their phylogenetic relationships and evolutionary history. The findings revealed a conservation in both gene composition and gene order. Except for the trnS1 gene lacking dihydrouracil arms, the other 21 tRNAs showed the typical clover-leaf secondary structure. According to the ΔRSCU method, we identified the seven most abundant optimal codons: CUA, GUA, CCA, CAA, GAA, AGC, and GGC. The construction of maximum parsimony, maximum likelihood, and Bayes trees yielded congruent topologies, and the 11 Pseudogastromyzon species were clustered into two major clusters. Among them, one of which was composed of P. fangi, P. changtingensis changtingensis, and P. changtingensis tungpeiensis, while the remaining eight species formed another cluster, further subdivided into five smaller clusters. Distinct clusters formed between P. fasciatus jiulongjiangensis and P. meihuashanensis, P. cheni and P. peristictus, and P. laticeps and P. lianjiangensis, and the remaining two species were clustered separately, thereby enhancing our understanding of them. Furthermore, our analysis results of divergence times revealed that these 11 Pseudogasteromyzon species underwent rapid differentiation in the Pleistocene epochs. Overall, our study sheds light on the phylogenetic relationship and evolutionary history of Pseudogasteromyzon species, providing a necessary knowledge foundation for further understanding the intricacies of an ecosystem health assessment.

The low bioavailability and poor gastrointestinal instability of curcumin hampers its application in pharmaceutical and food industries. Thus, it is essential to explore efficient carrier (e.g. a combination of polyphenols and proteins) for food systems. In this study, covalent ß-lactoglobulin (LG)-dicaffeoylquinic acids (DCQAs) complexes were prepared by combining ultrasound and free radical induction methods. Covalent interactions between LG and DCQAs were confirmed by analyzing reactive groups. Variations in secondary or tertiary structure and potential binding sites of covalent complexes were explored using Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy and circular dichroism. Results showed that the ß-sheet content decreased and the unordered content increased significantly (P < 0.05). The embedding rate of curcumin in prepared LG-DCQAs complexes using ultrasound could reach 49 % - 62 %, proving that complexes could embed curcumin effectively. This study highlights the benefit of ultrasound application in fabrication of protein-polyphenol complexes for delivering curcumin.

Emotions significantly shape the way humans make decisions. However, the underlying neural mechanisms of this influence remain elusive. In this study, we designed an experiment to investigate how emotions (specifically happiness, fear, and sadness) impact spatial decision-making, utilizing EEG data. To address the inherent limitations of sensor-level investigations previously conducted, we employed standard low-resolution brain electromagnetic tomography and functional independent component analysis to analyze the EEG data at the cortical source level. Our findings showed that across various spectral-spatial networks, positive emotion activated the decision-making network in the left middle temporal gyrus and inferior temporal gyrus, in contrast to negative emotions. We also identified the common spectral-spatial networks and observed significant differences in network strength across emotions. These insights further revealed the important role of the gamma-band prefrontal network. Our research provides a basis for deciphering the roles of brain networks in the impact of emotions on decision-making.

The retrogradation of wheat amylopectin during cold storage is the main reason for the increasing hardness of flour products such as steamed bread, bread and pastries, etc. Addition of gluten protein components is a green, safe, cheap and efficient method to inhibit the retrogradation of wheat amylopectin. In this paper, as being stored at 4 °C for 7 d, retrogradation rate of wheat amylopectin decreased from 55.02 % to 14.37 % after it was mixed with 20 % alkali-soluble glutenin (ASG) at 30 °C for 90 min, a 73.8 % reduction. The infrared results showed that the intensity of bending vibration of water molecules and intra-molecular ß-sheet content of ASG decreased during the interaction between amylopectin and ASG. Meanwhile, intermolecular ß-sheet and random coil contents of ASG increased. The results of 13C Solid-state NMR indicated that Qß, Pγ and Lγ of ASG involved in interaction of wheat amylopectin, ASG and molecule of water. Under the optimal conditions, the interaction of wheat amylopectin and ASG began to form spheres containing disulfide bonds, resulting in the attenuation or disappearance of the diffraction peak at 2θ 19.7°, which may be marked as the criterion for the best mixing time of wheat amylopectin and ASG. The retrogradation kinetic index (n) of wheat amylopectin decreased significantly with the addition of ASG and formation of disulfide bond was the key factor. ASG could be potentially used as an anti-retrogradation agent for amylopectin.

Hyaluronic acid (HA) used as a food ingredient is gaining acceptance and popularity. However, the studies available for the effect of HA concentrations on the properties of ß-lactoglobulin (ß-LG) were limited. In this study, we investigated that the molecular characterization and functional properties of the complex formed by the non-covalent binding of ß-LG and HA, as well as the ultrasound-assisted treatment at acidic pH. The optimal pH and ratio of ß-LG/HA were set as 7 and 4:1, respectively. The fluorescence spectroscopy, circular dichroism spectroscopy, and molecular docking results revealed that the addition of HA and ultrasound induced a decrease in random coil and α-helix and an increase in ß-sheet contents in ß-LG. By the complexation with HA, the thermal stability, freezing stability, and antioxidant properties of ß-LG were all improved under ultrasound treatment. The results of the present study can be useful for the modulation of HA based biopolymer complexes and the exploitation as encapsulating or structuring agents in food industry.

The innervation of the pelvic wall muscles is not very clear. This study aimed to reveal the division of neuromuscular compartments and localize the surface position and depth of the center of the intramuscular nerve-dense region (CINDR) of the pelvic wall muscles based on Sihler's staining. Twenty-four adult cadavers were used. To localize the CINDR of the pelvic wall muscles, horizontal (H) and longitudinal (L) reference lines were drawn, and Sihler's staining was used to reveal the intramuscular nerve distribution. The CINDR projection points (P and P' points) behind and in front of the body surface, the positions of the P points projected onto the H and L lines (PH and PL points), and the depth of CINDR were determined by spiral computed tomography scanning. The piriformis and obturator internus muscles can be divided into two and three neuromuscular compartments, respectively. The PH of CINDR of the piriformis muscle was located at 22.61 ± 2.66% of the H line, the PL was at 28.53 ± 6.08% of the L line, and the puncture depth of the piriformis muscle was at 24.64 ± 2.16% of the PP' line. The PH of CINDR of the obturator internus muscle was at 16.49 ± 1.20% of the H line, the PL was at 10.94 ± 1.09% of its L line, and the puncture depth was 6.26 ± 0.38 cm. These findings may guide the design of the compartmentalized transplantation of the pelvic wall muscles and improve the target localization efficiency and efficacy for injecting botulinum toxin A to treat pelvic wall muscle spasm.

We explored the effects of different conditions on the artificial incubation of redclaw crayfish eggs in an effort to improve this process. Samples at the egg and juvenile stages were selected. The samples at different stages were separated from the pleopods, then they were placed in incubator boxes and sterilized with different disinfectant solutions. The density was 300,400 and 500 eggs/incubator box, the vibration frequency was 11,16 and 26 vibrations/min, and the water circulation cycle was 2.1, 4.8 and 7.1 cycles/h. The results showed the eggs disinfected with 3000 ppm formaldehyde for 15 min had stronger antioxidant capacity. The hatching and survival rates of five pairs of appendage stage group were significantly lower than those of other groups. In the egg stage, acid phosphatase (ACP) level of compound eye pigmentation stage group was significantly higher than those of other groups. In the juvenile stage, malondialdehyde (MDA) content of five pairs of appendage stage group was significantly higher than those of other groups. The survival rate of 500 eggs/box group was significantly higher than that of other groups. In the egg stage, alkaline phosphatase (AKP) level of 400 eggs/box group was significantly higher than that of other groups. The survival rate of 11 vibrations/min group was significantly higher than that of other groups. In the egg stage, ACP and AKP levels of 11 vibrations/min group were significantly higher than those of 26 vibrations/min group. In the juvenile stage, superoxide dismutase (SOD), ACP and AKP levels of 11 vibrations/min group was significantly higher than those of 26 vibrations/min group. In the juvenile stage, AKP level of 4.8 cycles/h group was significantly lower than that of other groups. In conclusion, egg development at the stage after seven pairs of appendages, with a density of 400 eggs/box, vibration frequencies set at 11 vibrations/min achieved high hatching rates (93.58 %) and survival rates (75.67 %). Moreover, bronopol or hydrogen peroxide might have a better choice to replace formaldehyde if further exploration was conducted to reduce stimulation of the in vitro-grown egg. These conditions could be used on a large scale to optimize the production of redclaw crayfish.

Toll-like receptors (TLRs) are vital pattern recognition receptors that play a critical role in the innate immune response against pathogenic attack. Among the bacteria commonly found in the culture process of silver pomfret, Photobacterium damselae subsp. Damselae (PDD, gram-negative) and Nocardia seriolae (NS, gram-positive), can cause large-scale mortality in this fish species. However, there is currently no research on the role of TLRs in mediating the immune response of silver pomfret to these two bacterial infections. Therefore, in this study, we identified nine PaTLRs family members, including several fish-specific TLRs (TLR14 and TLR21). Phylogenetic analysis revealed that these PaTLRs genes could be classified into five subfamilies, namely TLR1, TLR3, TLR5, TLR7, and TLR11, indicating their evolutionary conservation. To further explore the interactions of TLR genes with immune-related mediators, protein and protein interaction network (PPI) results were generated to explain the association of TLR genes with TNF receptor-associated factor 6 (TRAF6) and other relevant genes in the MyD88-dependent pathway and NF-κb signaling pathway. Subsequently, RT-qPCR was conducted to verify the expression patterns of the nine TLR genes in the gills, skin, kidney, liver, and spleen of healthy fish, with most of the TLRs showing high expression levels in the spleen. Following infection with PDD and NS, these PaTLRs exhibited different expression patterns in the spleen, with PaTLR2, PaTLR3, PaTLR5, PaTLR7, PaTLR9, and PaTLR14 being significantly up-regulated. Furthermore, when spleen cells were treated with bacterial compositions, the majority of PaTLRs expression was up-regulated in response to Lipopolysaccharide (LPS) and lipophosphorylcholic acid (LTA) treatment, except for PaTLR21. Finally, changes in the expression levels of TLR-interacting genes were also observed under the stimulation of bacteria and bacterial compositions. The results of this study provide a preliminary reference for further understanding the mechanism of the innate immune response of the TLR gene family in silver pomfret and offer theoretical support for addressing the disease problems encountered during large-scale fish breeding.

We cultured silver pomfret for 20 days, decreasing water temperature from 18 to 8 ℃, and sampled muscle every 5 days. Muscle fiber degeneration and apoptosis began to increase at 13 ℃ detected by HE and TUNEL staining. Further analysis of transcriptome revealed that several apoptosis-related pathways were highly enriched by differentially expressed genes (DEGs). We analyzed 10 DEGs from these pathways by RT-qPCR during the temperature-decreasing process. JNK1, PIDD, CytC, Casp 3, and GADD45 were up-regulated after 15 and 20 days, while DUSP3, JNK2, and PARP genes were down-regulated after 15 and 20 days. DUSP5 was up-regulated from 10 to 20 days, and C-JUN was up-regulated after 20 days. We analyzed apoptosis in PaM cells under different temperatures (26 ℃, 23 ℃, 20 ℃, 17 ℃, and 14 ℃). The cell viability significantly declined from 14 to 20 ℃; the TUNEL and IHC results showed that the apoptosis signal increased with the temperature dropping, especially in 17 ℃ and 14 ℃; DUSP5, JNK1, CytC, C-JUN, Casp 3, and GADD45 were up-regulated at 17 ℃ and 14 ℃, and PIDD was up-regulated at 20 ℃, 17 ℃, and 14 ℃. DUSP3 was up-regulated at 20 ℃ but down-regulated at 17 ℃ and 14 ℃, and PARP was down-regulated at 17 ℃ and 14 ℃. JNK2 was up-regulated at 20 ℃ but down-regulated at 17 ℃ and 14 ℃. Our results suggest that DUSP could help inhibit apoptosis in the initial stage of cold stress, but low temperature could down-regulate it and up-regulate JNK-C-JUN, inducing apoptosis in a later stage. These data provide a basis for the study of the response mechanism of fish to cold.

Pampus argenteus is important for commercial fishery catch species and is an emerging target for aquaculture production. Notably, P. argenteus has a bizarre morphology and lacks pelvic fins. However, the reason for the lack of pelvic fins remains unclear, ultimately leading to frequent upside-down floating of P. argenteus during breeding and marked consumption of physical energy. Some lineages, including whales, fugu, snakes, and seahorse, independently lost the pelvic appendages over evolutionary time. Do different taxa employ the same molecular genetic pathways when they independently evolve similar developmental morphologies? Through analysis of the gene responsible for appendage localization, Hoxd9, it was discovered that the Hox domain was absent in the Hoxd9 gene of P. argenteus, and the Hoxd9b gene lacked the Hox9 activation region, a feature not observed in the Hoxd9 gene of other fish species. Interestingly, those distinctive characteristics are not observed in the Hoxd9 gene of other fish species. To determine the association between the Hoxd9 gene characteristics and the pelvic fin deletion in P. argenteus, the full-length cDNA of the Hoxd9a gene was cloned, and morphological observations of the species' juveniles were performed using stereomicroscopy and scanning electron microscopy. Thereafter, the tissue localization of Hoxd9a in the species was analyzed at the gene and protein levels. Based on the results, deletion of the Hoxd9a structural domain possibly leads to disruptions in the protein translation and the pelvic fin localization in P. argenteus during its early ontogenetic developmental stage, resulting in the absence of pelvic fins.

Bigeye tuna (BET, Thunnus obesus) is one of the most nutritious and luxurious cosmopolitan fish. The cooked BET products are capturing the interests of consumers by enhancing flavor and ensuring microbiological safety; however, the lipidomic fingerprints during daily cooking processes have not been investigated. In this work, lipid phenotypic data variation in BET during air-frying, roasting, and boiling was studied comprehensively using iKnife rapid evaporative ionization mass spectrometry (REIMS). The outstanding lipid ions mainly including fatty acids (FAs) and phospholipids (PLs) were identified structurally. It was demonstrated that the rates of heat transfer and lipid oxidation in air-fried BET were slower than those in roasted and boiled BET by elucidating the lipid oxidation and PL hydrolysis mechanism. Furthermore, multivariate REIMS data analysis (e.g., discriminant analysis, support vector machine, neutral network, and machine learning models) was used to characterize the lipid profile change in different cooked BET samples, among which FAC22:6, PL18:3/22:6, PL18:1/22:6, and others were the salient contributing features for determining the cooked BET samples. These results may provide a potential strategy for a healthy diet by controlling and improving functional food quality in daily cooking.

Pomegranate peels, the main byproduct of pomegranate production, are rich in phenolic compounds that are known for their effective antioxidant properties and have vast application prospects. In this study, steam explosion, an environmentally friendly technique, was applied to pretreat pomegranate peels for phenol extraction. We investigated the effects of explosion pressure, duration, and particle size on the content of total and individual phenolics, and antioxidant activity of pomegranate peels before and after in vitro digestion. The optimal conditions for a steam explosion for pomegranate peels in terms of total phenol content were a pressure of 1.5 MPa, a maintenance time of 90 s, and a particle size of 40 mesh. Under these conditions, pomegranate peel extract presented a higher yield of total phenols, gallic acid, and ellagic acid. However, it also had a lower content of punicalin and punicalagin, compared to the unexploded peels. There was no improvement in the antioxidant activity of pomegranate peels after the steam explosion. Moreover, the content of total phenol, gallic acid, ellagic acid, punicalin, and punicalagin, as well as the antioxidant activity of pomegranate peels, all increased after gastric digestion. Nevertheless, there was a large variation in the pomegranate peel processed by different pressure, duration, and sieve fractions. Overall, this study demonstrated that steam explosion pre-treatment could be an efficient method for improving the release of phenolics, especially gallic acid, and ellagic acid, from pomegranate peels.

Tartary buckwheat is a common functional food. Its grains are rich in flavonoids and phenols. The rapid measurement of flavonoids and phenols in buckwheat grains is of great significance in promoting the development of the buckwheat industry. This study, based on multiple scattering correction (MSC), standardized normal variate (SNV), reciprocal logarithm (Lg), first-order derivative (FD), second-order derivative (SD), and fractional-order derivative (FOD) preprocessing spectra, constructed hyperspectral monitoring models of total flavonoids content and total phenols content in tartary buckwheat grains. The results showed that SNV, Lg, FD, SD, and FOD preprocessing had different effects on the original spectral reflectance and that FOD can also reflect the change process from the original spectrum to the integer-order derivative spectrum. Compared with the original spectrum, MSC, SNV, Lg, FD, and SD transformation spectra can improve the correlation between spectral data and total flavonoids and total phenols in varying degrees, while the correlation between FOD spectra of different orders and total flavonoids and total phenols in grains was different. The monitoring models of total flavonoids and total phenols in grains based on MSC, SNV, Lg, FD, and SD transformation spectra achieved the best accuracy under SD and FD transformation, respectively. Therefore, this study further constructed monitoring models of total flavonoids and total phenols content in grains based on the FOD spectrum and achieved the best accuracy under 1.6 and 0.6 order derivative preprocessing, respectively. The R2c, RMSEc, R2v, RMSEv, and RPD were 0.8731, 0.1332, 0.8384, 0.1448, and 2.4475 for the total flavonoids model, and 0.8296, 0.2025, 0.6535, 0.1740, and 1.6713 for the total phenols model. The model can realize the rapid measurement of total flavonoids content and total phenols content in tartary buckwheat grains, respectively.

Dicaffeoylquinic acids (diCQAs) are found in a variety of edible and medicinal plants with various biological activities. An important issue is the low stability of diCQAs during extraction and food processing, resulting in the degradation and transformation. This work used 3,5-diCQA as a representative to study the influence of different parameters in ultrasonic treatment on the stability of diCQAs, including solvent, temperature, treatment time, ultrasonic power, duty cycle, and probe immersion depth. The generation of free radicals and its influence were investigated during the treatment. The stability of three diCQAs (3,5-diCQA, 4,5-diCQA and 3,4-diCQA) under the certain ultrasonic condition at different pH conditions was evaluated and found to decrease with the increase of pH, further weakened by ultrasonic treatment. Ultrasound was found to accelerate the degradation and isomerization of diCQAs. Different diCQAs showed different pattern of degradation and isomerization. The stability of diCQAs could be improved by adding epigallocatechin gallate and vitamin C.

Current production methods of the food colorants, gardenia blue (GB) and red (GR) pigments have low efficiency. One potential approach involves using lactic acid bacteria (LAB), which produce a high level of ß-glucosidase, produce the GB and GR using non-toxic and harmless process. The isolated strain Lactobacillus plantarum S3 and the reference strain Lb. plantarum KCTC3104 showed high ß-glucosidase activity levels of 1.01 and 1.44 unit/mL, respectively. The 12-h bioconversion yield of geniposide to genipin using two strains were 93.4% and 100%, respectively, which are high conversion percentage. For GB, the maximal production yield obtained using Lb. plantarum S3 and Lb. plantarum KCTC3104 under optimal conditions were 2.17 and 2.18 mg/mL, respectively. For GR, glutamic acid (Glu) with Lb. plantarum S3 is the best combination. To the best of our knowledge, this is the first report of an effective alternative method for the production of natural food colorants using LAB.

Plasmalogens (Pls) as the hydrophobic bioactive compound have shown potential in enhancing neurological disorders. However, the bioavailability of Pls is limited because of their poor water solubility during digestion. Herein, the hollow dextran sulfate/chitosan - coated zein nanoparticles (NPs) loaded with Pls was prepared. Subsequently, a novel in situ monitoring method utilizing rapid evaporative ionization mass spectrometry (REIMS) coupled with electric soldering iron ionization (ESII) was proposed to assess the lipidomic fingerprint alteration of Pls-loaded zein NPs during in vitro multiple-stage digestion in real time. A total of 22 Pls in NPs were structurally characterized and quantitatively analyzed, and the lipidomic phenotypes at each digestion stage were evaluated by multivariate data analysis. During multiple-stage digestion, Pls were hydrolyzed to lyso-Pls and free fatty acids by phospholipases A2, while the vinyl ether bond was retained at the sn-1 position. The result revealed that the contents of Pls groups were significantly reduced (p < 0.05). The multivariate data analysis results indicated that the ions at m/z 748.28, m/z 750.69, m/z 774.38, m/z 836.58, and etc. were the significant candidate contributors for monitoring the variation of Pls fingerprints during digestion. Results demonstrated that the proposed method exhibited potential for real-time tracking the lipidomic characteristics of nutritional lipid NPs digestion in the human gastrointestinal tract.

The pharyngeal sac is a comparatively rare organ in the digestive tract among teleost fishes. However, our understanding of this remarkable organ in the silver pomfret (Pampus argenteus) is limited. In the present study, we examined the various morphological and histological characteristics of the pharyngeal sac using histochemical techniques and electron microscopy. The pharyngeal sac showed unique characteristics such as well-developed muscular walls, weakly keratinized epithelium, numerous goblet cells, and needle-like processes on the papillae. The porous cavity of the papillae contained numerous adipocytes and was tightly enveloped by type I collagen fibers. These structures might provide mechanical protection and excellent biomechanical properties for grinding and shredding prey. A comparison of gene expression levels between the pharyngeal sac and esophagus using RNA-seq showed that phenotype-associated genes (epithelial genes and muscle genes) were upregulated, whereas genes related to nutrient digestion and absorption were downregulated in the pharyngeal sac. These results support the role of the pharyngeal sac in shredding and predigesting food. Overall, these findings provide a clearer understanding of the pharyngeal sac morphology and explain the morphological adaptations of the digestive tract for feeding on gelatinous prey. To our knowledge, this is the first report on pharyngeal sac gene expression in P. argenteus.
